First Exploration: Cafe Madras and Haji Ali

The small joint  to experience Tamilian food is a modest restaurant to hang around with friends and family  over  lazy weekends. But mind it, its pretty far for a western suburb dweller unless you have kind friends to drive you all the way to Matunga from Goregaon.

Our small group  including my brother Percy, his wife Rohini, school friend Gaurav, his wife Nehal
droved for close to what I thought a 45mins drive  which landed us in front of this small restaurant called Cafe Madras. It seemed to be a  no frill restaurant packed to its capacity and a waiting queue of around 10 people consisting of families .We waited for around 15 mins when floor manager ( I assume) called out my brothers name out and here we go to the mini feast of South Indian Food.

The feast began with Idli sambhar, Rasam Vada (an amazingly spicy treat), dahi missal  and Neer dosa with generous flow of sambhar and chatni.  Highlight of the day the south Indian Chatni. The dry power of chatni is at the bottom of the vatti  poured with generous quantity of oil. Gaurav showed us the art of blending the mixture right and licking it clean. He finished quite a few bowls. Its amazingly spicy and yummy.

My new discovery Tuppa, for me its a simpler version of Uttapam,  crisp and slightly bitter on upside,  soft  and tasty on down side, without any toppings of onions, tomato or mirchi. Simply fantabulous. Till then our most awaited late lateef friends Shahjad and Vishal arrived and they got a shock as in why the restaurant do not serve any dinner. The feast went on with repeat orders and an addition of  dahi chawaal (simple and sumptuous) till we were full. We concluded it with filter coffee which too was great.

But our journey of food didnt stop here. We went straight to Haji Ali to enjoy a cold night with fresh cream and Fruit. Strawberry Cream , Sitaphal cream and  litchi cream accompanied by a pizza called by late lateef. guys I am not disclosing the event of we taking few circles of the same place.

A perfect ending to a tasty evening was dumcharade games that we played after returning back to our colony.

Tips for people who decide to go to Madras Cafe.

  1. Neer dosa is thump-up but the chatni and sambhar is not that great.
  2. Rassam is amazingly tasty a must have thing
  3. The  dahi missal was Ok
  4. The Dahi chawal was a treat to the soul.
All set for my new destination Kathya Wadi retuarant
